WHAT CAUSES DRY, CRACKED FEET?

Feet are durable, but sensitive. After much use, feet can become dry and cracked. Commonly, cracked feet are referred to as heel fissures. As time goes by, heel fissures can become unattractive and discomforting. The deeper the heel fissures get, the more difficult it is to put any pressure on your feet.

To avoid dry, cracked feet, it helps to know what causes such a condition.

In general, a lack of moisture causes feet to get too dry, which causes cracked feet. When feet are too dry, skin can bunch up into thick calluses and corns, which appear as yellowing pieces of toughened skin; eventually, the skin darkens and splits the dry surface into distinct cracks. As the soles of your feet develop more hardened skin, the pressure can be painful; if left untreated, it can lead to skin bleeding and eventual infection.

Cracked feet can be a result of skin conditions, such as psoriasis or eczema, medical issues, such as thyroid disease or diabetes, or even extreme weather, such as when it’s too sunny, too cold, or too dry. Additionally, if you’re always on your feet, the constant walking and standing, especially on hard floors, can worsen the state of your cracked soles. A bad diet also contributes to heel fissures because it can lead to an excess in weight, which puts more pressure on your feet. Imprudent foot care, such as wearing the wrong shoes or not cleaning your feet, can also cause your skin quality to decrease. Specifically, the use of sandals and open-back shoes can be especially harmful to your feet because it leaves skin too exposed and offers little heel support. Aging is another possible cause of heel fissures, as skin naturally loses moisture over time.

Be aware and take care not to crack!
