TYPES OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

TYPES OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

When it comes to young adults, multiple sclerosis is without a doubt one of the most common neurological condition. Multiple sclerosis tends to affect the nerves of an individual’s spinal cord and brain by destroying myelin. Myelin is a layer of protein that usually surrounds fibres which are in the brain and the spinal cord.

Myelin helps in protecting the brains and spinal cord nerves. In addition to that it helps electrical signals travel from the brain to the rest of the body. If damaged the transfer of nerve signals from the brains are usually interfered with leading to a wide range of symptoms such as loss of vision, fatigue and ataxia. That said this article will be looking at the various types of multiple sclerosis.
Below are the various types of multiple sclerosis that are known to man.

Replacing Remitting MS
Around 8 out of 10 people who have multiple sclerosis are diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS. People who have this type of MS tend to have flare-ups of symptoms which are known as relapses. These relapses are known to last from one day to a few months and are usually followed by periods in which the symptoms are usually mild or tend to go away altogether.

Secondary progressive MS
Around half of people who have relapsing remitting tend to develop secondary progressive MS after a period of 15 years. Here symptoms are known to worsen over a period of time.

Primary progressive MS
Primary progressive MS is without a doubt the least common form of multiple sclerosis. People with this type of MS tend to have symptoms which gradually worsen over a period of time. In addition to that they usually don’t have remission periods.
