Patients with prostate cancer can live longer, thanks to early treatment

According to the major study, patients with advanced prostate cancer, can live 2 years longer if they receive the early treatment with a chemotherapy drug. In a case when a hormone treatment fails, docetaxol is given to the patients.

The new results that suggest that early treatment can extend the life of patients from 43 to 65 months, will be presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology. Now, experts say that these results, from Switzerland and Britain are very promising. Just in the UK, nearly 11.000 people die from prostate cancer each year, and more than 40.000 men are diagnosed. This trial included 2.962 men, in Switzerland and Britain, who was given 6 doses of docetaxol at the beginning of their treatment. Patients who received this drug, lived 10 months longer. Patients where the cancer has spread beyond the pelvis, has increased life expectancy for 22 months.

A researcher at Warwick University, Prof Nicholas James, said that all people who are diagnosed with prostate cancer should be given docetaxol. According to him, the NHS must act quickly. Prof Malcolm Mason a researcher from Cardiff University, said that this chemotherapy was used only in advanced stages of the cancer. Now, we should use it much earlier, as soon as a patient starts receiving hormone therapy. A 77 year old man from Hinckley in Leicestershire, John Angrave, was told that he will live 3-5 years. That was 7 years ago. Now, he is fishing and leading a normal life. There are some side effects of this treatment, but doctors say they are manageable.
